Army camouflage net at home | 14 January 2009

We love to recycle army gears and accessories for fashion and interior design elements. It is somehow comforting to know that these objects can be used for their beauty rather than for their original purpose and functionality . In our projects, we have been using the Finnish army snow camouflage net for awnings, window shades and panels for spectacular lighting effects. Introducing ’Sundot’!

Sustainable architecture | 14 December 2008

Last month my sons and I visited a community of sustainable and self sufficient "spaceships"in Taos, New Mexico: The Earthships. This is where the words "sustainable", "self-sufficient" and "organic architecture" make total sense. Each of the sixty Earthships rising from the desert were built by the community following the biotecture principles (based on biological systems of resource use and conservation) of architect Mike Reynolds. Walls made of old tires are buried 4 feet deep into the earth on three sides for maximum insulation. The structures are outfitted with photovoltaic cell and elaborate gray-water system that collect rain and snow. We loved the exotic indoor gardens and the use of recycled bottles in the walls for mesmerizing light effects and the aesthetic in every detail. I was impressed by the natural air conditioning considering the drastic changes of temperature in the desert. For two days, we felt completely connected to our environment and wished cities would integrate more biotecture in our homes. see our pictures

The use of colors in Vatsu | 24 September 2008

Colors have an amazing effect on us, a deep ocean blue will instantly set you on a relaxing mode, and a bright yellow can energize your brain and stimulate the intelligence as much as an earthy golden brown can ground you.

In Vatsu, we want to honor each element according to the Cardinal points: one way to do this is to bring colors in your interior and exterior walls:

- North West is the Air Element, colors are white and pearly white, silver-gray

- South West is the Earth element, colors are brown, cinnamon, ochre, oranges, golden or red tint

- North East is the Water Element, with blues and green blue, yellow topaze, citrine

- South East is Fire, flame yellows, red coral, orange and red

- Center is Space, color is gold.

Children and colors | 25 August 2008

Project commotion is a safe and nuturing space for children, where they develop mind and body awareness through movement. We used Vatsu colors guideline for each wall, according to the four cardinal points in the space. The result is a bright and sunny colors mix toned down by the soft gray ceiling and floors.

Victorian Groom Room | 27 July 2008

In our latest projects, we incorporated Vastu principals guidelines to choose colors and materials in each room.

The Victorian Groom room is positioned in the North West quadrant of the house. We honored the Air element with different shades of grays, creating a visually uncluttered space with textures such as the hand made porcelain mosaic tiles, lace windows coverings, and the hand crafted felt rug. We played with reflections and light for inspiring effects using mirrors, transparencies, textures contrast and natural light.

What is a "groom room"? French would call it a "Boudoir" or "salon de bain"... it is a wellness space at home... we just ditched the third bedroom of the house to create a private gym, yoga space, beauty parlour, you name it!

Vatsu, the yoga of design | 18 March 2008

Most people are familiar with Feng Shui, the architectural and interior design system from China. But have you ever heard of Vatsu? Vastu began thousand of years before Feng Shui and is part of Feng Shui’s origin.

The Sanskrit word "Vatsu"means "energy", it comes from the same tradition as yoga, meditation, Ayurveda and Vedic astrology. As the yoga of design, Vatsu brings greater balance, health, harmony, inner peace, a sense of well-being, and unity to our bodies, minds, emotions and lives.
